CSP Nkeiruka Nwode, speaking for the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters Annex in Lagos, has asked the public to show restraint and avoid circulating unconfirmed claims concerning the passing of Mary Habila.
In a Friday announcement, Nwode labeled the death a painful tragedy, sharing sympathies with the bereaved family and friends. She requested that citizens provide space for officials to conduct a comprehensive and unbiased investigation, which will include a medical autopsy. She emphasized that the pursuit of justice must be balanced with fairness for all parties.
The spokesperson noted that mourning is not a justification for rumors or damaging reputations through social media trial by public opinion. Nwode insisted that public discussion must remain rooted in factual evidence rather than speculation, ensuring that legal procedures are respected.
Furthermore, she warned against using this case to incite the public or publish defamatory content, noting that reckless accusations can unjustly harm long-standing reputations. She called for maturity and responsibility as the inquiry moves forward, and concluded by offering prayers for the deceased’s family and the triumph of truth and justice.
