Police leadership addresses renewed Lakurawa security threats in Niger State

Deputy Inspector-General Isyaku Mohammed has reassured Niger State residents that the police are actively responding to renewed Lakurawa threats and concerns regarding school safety.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Isyaku Mohammed visited Minna to alleviate public anxiety following reports that Lakurawa insurgents obstructed the New Bussa road in Borgu and threatened further violence. This incident follows recent widespread alarm regarding school safety, which has hindered academic activities across Niger State.

During his two-day visit, DIG Mohammed stated that Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun has ordered swift security measures to address the state’s unique threats. He emphasized that the police force has mobilized its School Protection Unit to ensure student safety, while urging school administrators to follow new safety protocols. Mohammed added that he is personally assessing the security climate across the North-Central zone to improve operational efficacy.

State Commissioner of Police Abdullahi Elleman highlighted the geographical difficulties the command faces, noting that the vast forests and rugged terrain in areas like Agwara, Borgu, and Kontagora complicate efforts to secure the region. He noted that pressure from ongoing security operations has driven criminals to launch desperate retaliatory strikes against police outposts and civilian areas.

While the command has successfully disrupted various criminal networks and recovered illicit weaponry, Elleman requested additional tactical assets, such as surveillance drones and armored vehicles, to bolster current capabilities. Both officials emphasized that securing the state requires active cooperation from community leaders and residents in sharing intelligence to combat ongoing criminal activity.
