The Benue State Police Command has successfully located and returned a newborn baby taken from a Gboko medical center shortly after birth. Authorities have taken 11 individuals into custody following the incident.
DSP Peter Aondongu, acting as the police spokesperson for Commissioner Cletus Nwadiogbu, confirmed that the case began on August 12, 2026. A resident named Aondofa Chia alerted the A Division in Gboko that his child had vanished after his wife gave birth at a local clinic.
Police investigators identified 35-year-old Nguhemen Asugh as the primary suspect. Officers found the child in her possession and ensured the infant was safely returned to the mother. Following the initial report, police detained nine people, eventually bringing two more suspects into custody later that evening.
The investigation is currently active as officials work to determine the specific level of involvement for each suspect. Commissioner Nwadiogbu praised his officers for their rapid intervention and reiterated the police department’s dedication to community safety.
