Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has issued a ban on unauthorized social media use by Nigeria Police Force personnel. This directive aims to protect the reputation and professionalism of the institution. According to a statement from Force Public Relations Officer CSP Anietie Iniedu, the order addresses rising concerns regarding officers sharing content online while in uniform or while appearing identifiable as police representatives.
While acknowledging the utility of digital communication, the IGP emphasized that all activity must align with established departmental policies and national regulations. Officers are prohibited from posting in uniform, commenting on official duties, leaking tactical information, or leveraging their status for personal gain or entertainment. Supervision is key to this enforcement; Commissioners and commanders must ensure their subordinates follow these rules or face accountability themselves.
To enforce this policy, the Force Intelligence Department and the X-Squad have been tasked with monitoring online activity to catch those violating these standards. The IGP remains focused on maintaining high levels of discipline and public trust as the force continues its operations.
