Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has leveled serious accusations of corruption against President Bola Tinubu. These claims stem from an International Monetary Fund consultation report suggesting that ₦8.83 trillion in 2025 expenditures remains absent from the official federal budget.
In a social media statement, Obi highlighted that this massive sum—roughly two percent of Nigeria’s GDP—bypassed both administrative scrutiny and legislative oversight. He pointed out that this figure exceeds 35 percent of the planned ₦23.96 trillion capital expenditure for the year. According to the former Anambra State governor, this amount is greater than the total combined funding for the health and education sectors, representing a significant missed opportunity for national development.
Obi characterized the situation as a clear example of financial mismanagement, incompetence, and a lack of sensitivity toward the populace. He reiterated his belief that the administration has failed to protect the security and welfare of citizens, thereby renewing his demand for President Tinubu’s resignation. He further encouraged the public to pursue accountability through democratic channels. At the time of this report, the Presidency had not issued a formal response to these allegations.
