Oladipupo Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Ogun State governorship, has accused state governors across the nation of stealing funds meant for local governments. During a visit to the Egba Traditional Council at Ake Palace in Abeokuta, Adebutu asserted that such financial misconduct occurs regardless of political affiliation, impacting both APC and PDP administrations.
Seeking the support of traditional rulers for his 2027 election bid, Adebutu emphasized that his administration would prioritize full financial independence for local councils. He argued that granting these authorities direct control over their allocations would spur necessary grassroots development. He also criticized the current trend of financing infrastructure through debt, proposing that the state move toward alternative funding strategies to connect Ogun and Lagos effectively.
Supporting this stance, State PDP Chairman Abayomi Tella observed that local government efficiency has plummeted due to a lack of fiscal control. He compared the current situation to his own tenure as a council chairman, where he successfully funded road projects with a specific allocation. Additionally, the party’s candidate for Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, endorsed Adebutu’s leadership, while the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, praised the candidate’s character and pledged his support for the campaign.
