Peter Obi labels Lokoja court ruling a blow to democratic progress

Peter Obi has criticized a Federal High Court decision in Lokoja that nullified the earlier registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress as a political party, calling the development a threat to democratic institutions.

Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced significant alarm following a Federal High Court decision in Lokoja. On Friday, the court vacated a previous directive that had compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission to register the NDC as an official political party.

Obi shared his perspective on social media, characterizing the ruling as a significant obstacle for the nation’s democratic growth. He highlighted the necessity for judicial and legislative independence, arguing that public trust hinges on the integrity of these bodies. The former Anambra governor insisted that his critique is rooted in fundamental principles rather than personal political gain.

Justice Isah Dashen ordered the reversal after the Peace Movement Party claimed that the original December 10, 2025, ruling violated its rights regarding a disputed logo. The court has now commanded that all relevant parties be brought into the case, effectively nullifying the previous registration of the NDC until the underlying legal issues are settled. Counsel C.S. Ekeocha confirmed that the initial recognition granted by INEC has been suspended while the substantive litigation proceeds.
