Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the upcoming 2027 elections, has advised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to prioritize significant corruption investigations over targeting online activists. Through his media team, POMR, Obi highlighted the recent harassment of commentators Randy Peter and Mama Pee as an unproductive use of the agency’s resources.
Spokesperson Idris Zekeri stated that the commission should dedicate its efforts to combating serious financial crimes that hinder the nation’s economic progress and infrastructure. The organization expressed concern that focusing on online critics, who are often pursued for minor or debatable offenses, detracts from the agency’s primary mission and risks damaging public trust.
POMR emphasized that the EFCC must remain neutral in social and political conflicts to preserve its credibility. By shifting its focus back to high-level corruption and the mismanagement of public funds, the commission can better serve its mandate and foster a more accountable public sector.
