Oyo State Assembly Flags Insecure Borders Following Kidnappings

Oyo State lawmakers have highlighted security failures at state borders following a school abduction, while the police have officially denied viral rumors that the victims were moved by air.

The Oyo State House of Assembly has voiced serious concerns regarding the instability in border regions after the kidnapping of students and educators in the Oriire Local Government Area. Amidst this, the state police force has officially refuted reports circulating on social media that suggested the victims were transported to Kaduna State via helicopter.

Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin met with Commissioner of Police Abimbola Olugbenga at the Eleyele headquarters in Ibadan to address the surge in abductions within the Oke-Ogun area. During the discussions, Ogundoyin highlighted that criminals frequently exploit vulnerable borders and isolated areas to stage attacks. He urged security forces to bolster intelligence operations and increase patrols to safeguard the populace.

While acknowledging the efforts of the security services to locate the captives, the Speaker emphasized the importance of professional, proactive policing. In a related statement, police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade dismissed the helicopter abduction theory as entirely fabricated. The command labeled the claims as irresponsible misinformation that risks hindering active search missions.

Authorities reiterated that they are working alongside other security agencies to ensure the safe recovery of the individuals. The police issued a stern warning against the spread of unverified information and promised legal action against those who disseminate false reports intended to cause public alarm. Both the legislative and police branches have pledged to increase collaboration to address these growing threats throughout the state.
