The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has condemned Governor Seyi Makinde for seeking United Nations intervention regarding recent kidnappings, labeling the move as embarrassing. This criticism came via a statement from Wasiu Sadare, the party’s publicity secretary, issued on Tuesday.
Governor Makinde requested UN involvement on Monday after meeting students and teachers who were freed following their abduction in May. The APC argued that the governor’s response was unexpected and inappropriate. According to the party, while banditry is a national issue, Oyo State has faced significant security failures since 2019 under the current administration.
The opposition party accused the governor of politicizing public security and welfare. They suggested that if Makinde desires an external investigation, he should first subject his own administration to scrutiny. Specifically, the APC demanded transparency regarding the N7.7 billion surveillance aircraft contract, the handling of funds for the Bodija explosion, the Agbowo Shopping Complex project, and alleged misuse of local government allocations.
Furthermore, the party linked the state’s security decline to the governor’s leadership, mentioning the violence in Igangan and the acquisition of weapons by figures like Mukaila Auxiliary. They also called for audits concerning stadium and airport upgrades along with various loan-related controversies.
