A catastrophic flood struck the capital of Afghanistan’s Nuristan province on Monday, leaving at least 105 people missing and nine confirmed dead. Feraidon Samim, a spokesperson for the provincial governor, stated that the missing individuals include the town mayor along with various government workers. The flooding caused extensive destruction in Parun, leveling the municipality building, hotels, and numerous shops located along the river.
Local aid worker Ashiqullah Safi reported that residents are currently conducting search operations manually, hampered by large boulders deposited by the floodwaters. Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) has acknowledged significant human and financial devastation, noting that rescue and recovery efforts are actively ongoing. Government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed the casualties and property damage via social media.
Mawlavi Mati-ul-Haq Khalis, who heads the national environmental protection agency, recently highlighted that rising flood activity is worsening the nation’s ongoing humanitarian crisis. This disaster follows reports of increasing environmental challenges across the country.
