His teenage son, Colt Gray, committed a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, during September 2024, resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers, with nine others injured.
Colin Gray provided the AR-15-style rifle to his son as a Christmas gift in 2023, ignoring explicit warnings regarding the boy’s threats to attack a school. Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm emphasized that the conviction stemmed from the father’s failure to intervene when clear warning signs emerged and his negligence in allowing access to firearms.
Earlier in the week, 16-year-old Colt Gray was sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to the attack. This case follows a precedent set by Jennifer and James Crumbley, who were the first parents in the U.S. to receive prison time for their child’s school shooting, though Colin Gray is notable for being the first parent convicted of murder in such circumstances.
