Palestinian youth athlete dies following shooting in West Bank settler raid

A 17-year-old Palestinian football player has died from injuries sustained during a settler-led attack in the West Bank, sparking renewed concerns over regional violence.

Seventeen-year-old Fadi Hamdallah al-Nassan, a talented footballer for Al-Mughayyir Club and the Palestinian national youth team, passed away on Saturday. He had been hospitalized for one week after sustaining a gunshot wound during an attack by Israeli settlers in his home village, located in the occupied West Bank.

During a funeral procession attended by many, the teen’s body was moved from the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah to Al-Mughayyir for burial. The Palestinian Football Association stated that Nassan was struck in the thigh during the July 11 incident, which necessitated an amputation before his eventual death. The association further alleged that Israeli forces opened fire while the settlers were raiding the village.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, the chaotic event also resulted in injuries to two other residents via rubber bullets and a 10-year-old boy who suffered a head injury from a stun grenade. The boy’s father recounted that his son rushed toward the commotion after hearing the cries of local women. The Israeli military has not provided a response regarding the allegations.

Since the conflict in Gaza began in October 2023, the United Nations has observed a significant rise in settler-linked violence across the West Bank. Current figures from the Palestinian health ministry indicate that over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in the territory since that time, while official Israeli data reports 46 deaths among soldiers and civilians within the same period.
