The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of transforming Nigeria into an authoritarian regime. In a statement released on Saturday by National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong, the opposition party referenced a recent Human Rights Foundation assessment to support its claims. The PDP argues that the findings align with local experiences regarding the erosion of democratic institutions, the silencing of opposition, and a lack of executive oversight.
According to the PDP, the foundation’s “Tyranny Tracker” report indicates that Nigeria has failed across multiple democratic benchmarks. The party pointed to specific concerns, including the intimidation of religious leaders like Cardinal Onaiyekan and the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, as evidence of suppressed free speech. Furthermore, the PDP criticized the National Assembly for failing to provide meaningful checks on the executive branch, alleging that legislators have neglected their duty to ensure constitutional compliance.
The statement further warned that the current political climate, characterized by the alleged weaponization of security agencies and partisan actions by the electoral commission, threatens the nation’s future. The PDP urged the government to reduce political tensions and ensure the 2027 elections are transparent. The party emphasized that the survival of the country depends on a return to democratic norms, warning that prioritizing electoral victory over constitutional integrity could have dire consequences for national stability.
