Three-time Olympian Jenny Simpson has returned home from the hospital following a cardiac arrest during a running event last week. The 39-year-old athlete collapsed while leading a pace group at the Sir Walter Miler event in Raleigh, North Carolina.
A spokesperson for her employer, Fleet Feet, confirmed that Simpson received immediate assistance on-site, including CPR and defibrillation. Following her collapse, she was treated at UNC Rex Hospital and subsequently Duke University Hospital. She is now recovering in North Carolina alongside her husband.
Simpson, who achieved gold in the 1500m at the 2011 World Championships and bronze at the 2016 Rio Games, concluded her professional racing career in 2024. She currently serves as the chief running officer for Fleet Feet. Her family expressed significant appreciation for the medical personnel and first responders who managed her care during the nine-day hospitalization. Simpson also shared her gratitude for the widespread support received from the running community.
