Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwoland, has advocated for significant reforms to rectify errors committed by previous, unregistered coalitions of Muslim clerics. During the inauguration of a new, 1,000-member league of Imams and Alfas for the South West, Edo, and Delta states in Ibadan, the monarch declared his full backing for the organization.
He emphasized that this new group holds official legal status, having received certification from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) under registration number 9003000. By decentralizing power, the organization aims to empower local clerics and foster a sense of inclusivity across the region.
Beyond structural reform, Oba Akanbi urged clerics to engage directly in governance. He argued that active participation in politics would allow Muslims to showcase their values and elevate the standard of living for the populace. He encouraged them to pursue elected or appointed roles rather than waiting for political influence to be granted to them. The monarch also advised the leadership to remain resilient and consistent, noting that while initial challenges are expected, the legal recognition of the league ensures its longevity and legitimacy.
