Professor Oghenetega Ighedo has made history at the University of South Africa, becoming the first Black woman to receive a doctorate in Pure Mathematics in the school’s 148-year existence. A Nigerian academic currently serving as an Associate Professor within UNISA’s Department of Mathematical Sciences, she finalized her degree in only three years.
Her academic path started at Delta State University with an undergraduate degree in Industrial Mathematics, followed by a Master of Science in Pure Mathematics from the University of Ibadan. Ighedo cites her mother, a former math teacher, as her primary inspiration. She chose to specialize in pure mathematics partly because of the significant underrepresentation of Black women in the field.
Completing this degree was a significant personal challenge, as she managed her doctoral studies while married and raising two children, even expecting her third child during the process. She finished the program on schedule despite these family responsibilities. Ighedo currently advocates for young women to maintain focus, emphasizing that resilience is key to overcoming professional and academic barriers. Her success is widely recognized as a significant advancement for diversity in STEM and highlights the increasing impact of African scholars on the international research community.
