Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has voiced his dissatisfaction regarding Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. During a meeting in Abuja, he directed former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo to share the frustrations of the Nigerian public with the national squad.
Highlighting that football acts as a crucial unifying element for the nation, Wike emphasized that fans are deeply disappointed by the team’s exclusion from the global event. He noted that the country’s citizens held higher expectations for the team and stressed the importance of learning from these setbacks to secure spots in future tournaments.
The minister specifically tasked Yobo with informing both the players and the technical staff that millions of supporters find the current situation unacceptable. Despite the setback, Wike remains optimistic that the Super Eagles have the potential to recover and restore their status in international football. This failure marks another consecutive absence from the competition following their missed participation in the 2022 Qatar tournament.
