Algeria has become the sixth nation from Africa to be knocked out of the 2026 World Cup. Their elimination occurred on Friday after a 2-0 loss to Switzerland during the Round of 32.
Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye, netted in each half of the match, sealed the fate of the Desert Foxes. This result marks a significant milestone for Switzerland, as it represents their first World Cup knockout stage victory in 88 years. The Swiss team is now set to compete against either Ghana or Colombia in the next phase.
With Algeria’s departure, more than 50 percent of the original ten African participants have been removed from the competition. Other eliminated teams from the continent include Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa, DR Congo, and Tunisia. Currently, Morocco remains the sole African representative still in the tournament.
