NYAN Demands Independent Police Investigation into Mary Habila’s Death

The Northern Youth Assembly of Nigeria is calling for a transparent and unbiased police investigation into the death of Mary Habila, who passed away at the home of Minister of Works David Umahi.

The Northern Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN) has formally requested that Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu oversee an impartial and professional inquiry into the passing of Mary Habila. Habila reportedly died on June 27, 2026, at the Ebonyi State home of Minister of Works David Umahi.

Speaking for the group in Abuja, Shuaib Ishaq Yahaya emphasized that every individual linked to the incident must be vetted. NYAN requested that investigators utilize all forensic data, medical findings, and security footage to establish the truth. The group underscored that the pending post-mortem examination must be conducted with high standards to maintain public trust.

To ensure total transparency, the assembly proposed that the autopsy include oversight from the victim’s family, civil society groups, and the National Human Rights Commission. Furthermore, NYAN requested that the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences release all relevant employment documentation regarding the deceased to clarify her professional status.

The organization maintained that this case serves as a benchmark for national accountability, asserting that justice should be applied regardless of an individual’s political position or social standing. They encouraged the public to remain calm while the investigation proceeds, noting that the family of Mary Habila is entitled to clear answers.
