The Yobe State Police Command is implementing new measures to improve local law enforcement, specifically targeting issues such as extortion, improper uniforms, and the misuse of weaponry. Police Commissioner Usman Kanfani Jibrin addressed these concerns during a high-level briefing with senior staff in Damaturu on Tuesday.
Representing the command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim noted that the session was held to align local operations with the standards set by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan. While acknowledging the hard work of his officers, Commissioner Jibrin reiterated that unethical behavior will not be tolerated. He warned that any personnel involved in extortion or failing to uphold professional standards will encounter serious disciplinary consequences.
Operational guidelines have been tightened regarding the storage and management of firearms. Furthermore, the Commissioner urged officers to foster stronger partnerships with community leaders, civil society, and transport groups to improve intelligence gathering. A specific emphasis was placed on the School Protection Initiative to ensure educational sites remain secure.
Finally, the Commissioner addressed the issue of officer appearance, noting that violations of uniform regulations—such as wearing improper footwear or incorrect name tags—negatively impact the public image of the Force. He urged all personnel to uphold the Inspector-General’s vision of a service-oriented and highly professional police force.
