The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reiterated that the nation’s downstream petroleum industry operates under a deregulated framework. Consequently, petrol pricing is dictated by market conditions rather than government mandates.
Ali Ajmi, the NMDPRA State Coordinator in Sokoto, clarified that the agency has issued no instructions to set uniform pump prices for Premium Motor Spirit. Under this system, marketers operate independently, setting prices based on factors like supply levels, transportation expenses, and operational requirements.
Currently, fuel costs in Sokoto fluctuate between ₦1,000 and ₦1,200 per litre. Ajmi explained that these rates are influenced by the significant distances products must travel from coastal depots, often requiring up to 10 days of transit time. The agency is actively working with marketers to encourage fair pricing despite these logistical hurdles.
To protect consumers, the NMDPRA has increased surveillance to combat issues like fuel pump under-dispensing. Ajmi encouraged the public to report suspicious activities, noting that inspection teams are prepared to investigate claims using calibrated equipment. Furthermore, the authority is partnering with various Sokoto state ministries to enhance oversight and transparency within the petroleum sector.
