A volatile confrontation broke out at the Dawaki Police Quarters in Abuja on Friday as Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) staff faced violent resistance during an anti-theft enforcement mission. The team, supported by security personnel, entered the estate following reports of widespread meter tampering and unauthorized power connections.
The operation aimed to disconnect illegal setups and restore authorized metering. Upon arrival, officials identified over 15 homes with bypassed meters and discovered that the estate’s security gate was powered by an illicit connection. The situation escalated when local residents obstructed the team, preventing them from leaving.
Several AEDC employees were injured during the scuffle, and some had their mobile devices confiscated or cleared of evidence. The injured workers required medical attention, and the incident was formally reported to the local Divisional Police Officer before the team could safely depart. AEDC Managing Director Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye condemned the violence, asserting that the company will pursue legal action against the attackers. He emphasized that such intimidation tactics hinder the firm’s ability to maintain a stable power supply and protect infrastructure.
This event reflects a broader trend of hostility toward utility workers during nationwide efforts to curb power theft. Industry experts warn that these illegal activities jeopardize the financial viability of Nigeria’s power sector and pose significant safety risks. The AEDC remains committed to collaborating with security agencies to ensure those involved in this assault are brought to justice.
