Nigerian soldier apprehended following accidental shooting of peer in Borno

A soldier has been detained by the Nigerian Army following an accidental shooting incident in Damboa, Borno State, which left a fellow service member injured.

The Nigerian Army has taken a soldier into custody after he unintentionally fired his weapon, wounding a colleague at a defensive post in Borno State. According to security expert Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. on June 20 at a military location known as Sierra 7 in the Damboa Local Government Area.

Reports indicate that the soldier, who belongs to the 25 Brigade, was inside the installation when his firearm discharged by mistake. The bullet struck another member of the unit. Immediate medical aid was provided to the victim at the scene, and they were later moved to a field ambulance facility for specialized care.

The Army command stated that the shooter was promptly disarmed and detained. An inquiry into the specific circumstances of the discharge is currently underway, and the individual may face disciplinary proceedings. Military officials reaffirmed the necessity for strict adherence to weapon handling and safety guidelines to avoid such incidents in active zones.
