The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has called on nurses and midwives across the country to advance their academic qualifications to the doctoral level, citing the growing demand for highly educated nursing professionals both at home and abroad.

Acting Registrar/CEO of the Council, Mr. Ndagi Alhassan, gave the charge during the maiden nursing induction ceremony at Gregory University, Uturu, where 21 pioneer nurses were formally inducted. Represented by Mrs. Eleanor Nwaka of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Imo State, Alhassan encouraged the inductees to seize opportunities to earn higher degrees, including PhDs.

“There is a world of possibilities for nurses with advanced academic training,” he noted. “Departments of nursing and healthcare institutions in Nigeria and overseas increasingly seek nurses with higher degrees.”

He explained that the Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc) program is crafted to balance academic rigor with clinical excellence, enabling graduates to make precise diagnoses, design effective care plans, and deliver holistic healthcare services.

Alhassan also emphasized the importance of practical experience, urging the graduates to learn from their colleagues during their mandatory internship. “Be open to correction, adapt positively, and uphold the professional standards that define nursing,” he advised.

The university’s founder, Prof. Greg Ibe—represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Uwaoma Uche—praised the Nursing Council for its oversight in ensuring the institution’s program meets national and global standards.

Chancellor Gregory Ibe Jr. highlighted the resilience and determination shown by the inductees, saying, “Your decision to begin your professional journey here is a testament to your courage and belief in the future.”

Pro-Chancellor Prof. Augustine Uwakwe reminded the graduates of the need for compassion, lifelong learning, and advocacy in a rapidly changing healthcare landscape. “You’ve already shown the resilience and care that nursing demands—now take that spirit into the world,” he said.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Celestina Njoku, represented by Prof. Regina Ogali, closed with a heartfelt message: “You’re stepping into a noble profession. Let compassion, integrity, and humility guide every step you take.”
