The Nigerian Federal Government has partnered with TracTrac MSL to launch a new national framework and investment strategy for agricultural mechanization. This initiative aims to bolster food security and increase local food production. As part of this effort, officials announced plans to build a tractor assembly facility capable of producing up to 4,000 units annually to decrease reliance on imported machinery.
During a high-level policy dialogue in Abuja, Agriculture Minister Senator Abubakar Kyari emphasized that these measures seek to transition Nigeria toward a ‘Mechanization-as-a-Service’ model. This approach ensures that farmers can access essential technology at affordable rates. The government has already begun the Renewed Hope National Agricultural Mechanization Programme, which includes the deployment of 2,000 tractors and thousands of agricultural implements across the country.
The strategy focuses on fostering private-sector involvement to create a sustainable ecosystem for technology, capital, and skill development. Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum praised the federal administration’s efforts, noting the importance of such programs for economic growth. TracTrac MSL CEO Godson Ohuruogu highlighted that the success of these policies will ultimately be measured by the tangible improvements experienced by farmers, such as timely service delivery and increased operational efficiency.
