The South East Development Commission (SEDC) has finished evaluating 4,000 hectares of land in Enugu State to prepare for a new agro-mechanisation initiative. This project intends to increase local food supplies and strengthen regional food security.
Dr. Cliff Ogbede, the Executive Director for Natural Resources, Agriculture and Rural Development, led the site visits alongside representatives from the Enugu State Government. The process involved visiting three senatorial zones to meet with local stakeholders and build consensus. Identified locations include 2,000 hectares in Nkpologwu within Uzo-Uwani, another 2,000 hectares in Elugwu Akwu-Achi located in Oji River, and additional sites in Nomeh Unataeze, Nkanu East.
These visits were essential for discussing land rights, safety measures, and logistics. According to Dr. Ogbede, the project aligns with the SEDC Vision 2050 and the broader South East Agricultural Development Programme. By fostering partnerships with traditional rulers and council leaders, the commission aims to boost commercial farming and provide employment for the youth. Host communities have responded with enthusiasm, viewing the venture as a significant opportunity to drive rural growth through state-level collaboration.
