Nigeria enhances passport authentication through ICAO global network

Nigeria has successfully linked its passport verification system to the ICAO global network to resolve authentication issues for travelers at international borders.

The Nigerian government has bolstered the verification process for its passports by integrating all Country Signing Certificate Authorities into the Public Key Directory managed by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Immigration Service, announced that this integration was finalized on Monday, July 13, 2026, during an event at the ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Canada.

Led by Comptroller-General of Immigration Kemi Nandap, this initiative aims to fix authentication issues that Nigerian travelers previously encountered at certain international borders. By establishing this secure chain of trust within the ICAO system, border authorities in all member nations can now efficiently verify Nigerian passports.

This achievement highlights the agency’s dedication to improving digital identity security and border cooperation, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The Nigeria Immigration Service stated that it remains focused on strengthening travel document integrity and ensuring smoother international border crossings for its citizens.
