The Lagos State Government has announced its intention to prosecute an individual on X for circulating a deceptive video that incorrectly depicted a flood in Lagos. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, confirmed on Tuesday that the footage, shared by the account ‘Enugu Loudspeaker (#Jamessucre2)’, was actually filmed in Bangladesh.
Commissioner Wahab emphasized that deleting the incorrect post after it was identified as false will not protect the user from legal consequences. He urged members of the public to verify information before sharing to avoid spreading misinformation that could hinder legitimate governance and public discourse. While the government recognizes the importance of free speech, officials maintain that such rights do not grant immunity for sharing malicious or misleading content.
Although the account holder acknowledged the error and removed the video after it was debunked, the state government remains committed to pursuing the case through legal channels. Officials stated that this action is necessary to hold the user accountable for the intentional spread of false narratives.
