Nigeria and Germany have solidified their promise to bolster bilateral ties across several strategic sectors, including security, energy, trade, and investment. This agreement followed a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Johann Wadephul.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted Germany as a primary European partner, built upon decades of mutual trust. She outlined a broad agenda for collaboration, spanning renewable energy, digital innovation, agricultural development, and healthcare. The Minister emphasized that the Nigeria-Germany Bi-national Commission remains a vital mechanism for executing these goals, supported by Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms intended to attract private investment and ensure sustainable growth.
Furthermore, the Minister expressed appreciation for Germany’s ongoing contributions to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), specifically regarding regional security and the fight against terrorism. She encouraged more German corporations to tap into Nigeria’s infrastructure, mining, and industrial sectors.
Johann Wadephul noted that the diplomatic relationship has thrived for over 65 years, beginning shortly after Nigeria’s 1960 independence. As Nigeria is Germany’s largest trading partner in the region, with trade volumes rising by 10 percent recently, Wadephul signaled a strong interest in expanding this economic footprint. He underscored that the Nigeria-Germany Business Forum acts as a essential catalyst for these investments. Both ministers concluded by reaffirming their dedication to regional stability and closer diplomatic coordination.
