The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday the implementation of export restrictions against ten American businesses operating within the defense and rare earths sectors. This move serves as a direct countermeasure to the recent decision by the United States to place several Chinese companies on a restricted trade list.
This escalation occurs despite previous efforts by US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to stabilize relations, specifically regarding tariff reductions. Tensions have remained high due to ongoing disputes over military and technological dominance. The US government recently expanded its blacklist to include 80 entities and subsidiaries accused of supporting the Chinese military, a group that includes major firms like Alibaba, Baidu, and BYD.
Beijing officially described the sanctions as a necessary response to the US government’s recent additions to its list of alleged Chinese military enterprises. The list of sanctioned American entities includes defense contractors such as Aveox and Oshkosh Defense, along with rare earth material suppliers including MP Materials and USA Rare Earth.
