New Zealand secures dominant victory to level series against England

New Zealand defeated England by 253 runs in the second Test at The Oval, leveling the series 1-1 after a dominant bowling display from Matt Henry.

England concluded a difficult two weeks with a substantial 253-run loss to New Zealand in the second Test at The Kia Oval. This result leaves the three-match series tied at 1-1 heading into the final game at Trent Bridge.

Facing an improbable target of 463, England began the final day at 182-5. Their resistance crumbled in less than 60 minutes, largely due to a masterful bowling display by Matt Henry. The New Zealand seamer finished with 6-29, recording match figures of 11-109, which stands as the best performance by a Kiwi bowler in a Test match on English soil.

Joe Root fell early to Henry, and the rest of the lineup followed shortly after. Jofra Archer, Matthew Fisher, and Josh Tongue were all dismissed cheaply as the innings folded. This defeat follows a turbulent period for the England squad, marked by the absence of captain Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson, who were sidelined following a disciplinary investigation regarding a midnight curfew breach.

With the investigation nearing its conclusion, both Stokes and Atkinson were pulled from their county matches on Sunday, signaling their likely return for the deciding Test. The team now looks to regroup after this heavy setback.
