Martina Navratilova gives Iga Swiatek high marks for performance

Iga Swiatek remains consistent at Grand Slams, reaching the third round at Wimbledon after a dominant win over Karolina Pliskova, earning praise from tennis icon Martina Navratilova.

Iga Swiatek has solidified her position in tennis history, becoming only the third woman in the Open era to secure a third-round spot in 26 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments, joining the ranks of legends Martina Navratilova and Conchita Martinez. Following an emotional opening victory against Taylor Townsend, the Polish world number three appeared much more composed as she dispatched former Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 6-3. Swiatek noted that she felt significantly more stable and focused during this match compared to her initial round.

While Swiatek excelled, 2022 champion Elena Rybakina continued her strong form by defeating American Caty McNally 6-1, 6-2. The Kazakhstani star is currently eyeing both the championship title and the top spot in the global rankings. Elsewhere, Amanda Anisimova narrowly escaped a defeat against Sofia Kenin in a tense tie-break and is set to face Madison Keys in the next round.

Despite 18-time major winner Martina Navratilova awarding her performance an A+ grade, the six-time major champion remained humble, jokingly suggesting her play was closer to a B grade due to some inconsistent moments. Swiatek’s victory ensures her impressive streak of reaching at least the third round at every Grand Slam played this decade remains intact. She now looks ahead to her next challenge against the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala.
