A faction of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Edo South Senatorial District has formally rejected the party’s recently formed national reconciliation committee. Led by Agbonaye Osazee Ofo, these members argue that the panel is merely a superficial effort to hide injustices resulting from controversial primary elections rather than a genuine attempt to resolve internal disputes.
The group asserts that the committee, which includes notable figures like Prof. Pat Utomi and Engr. Buba Galadima, lacks the capacity to legitimize flawed electoral outcomes. According to the aggrieved members, the committee is being used to pressure those who believe their mandates were stolen into silence, effectively trading their rights for a facade of party harmony.
Ofo emphasized that true unity cannot exist without justice. He stated that the party must focus on correcting wrongdoing and examining evidence from the contested primaries rather than demanding that members accept potentially manipulated results. The group argues that if the NDC intends to serve as a democratic alternative for the 2027 national elections, it must first uphold democratic principles within its own internal structure.
The statement concludes that until the party is willing to openly address the contested primaries and restore stolen mandates, the reconciliation committee remains a hollow public relations exercise. The members maintain that any attempt to enforce peace without first providing justice serves only to alienate the base and undermine the party’s credibility.
