Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, representing Borno North, has labeled the federal government’s failure to execute the capital budget as grounds for impeachment. During a Senate Committee on Finance session on Monday, he challenged Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele regarding the status of the national economy.
Monguno questioned the whereabouts of government revenues, noting that 70% of the 2025 budget was rolled over into 2026 with an initial promise that 30% would be completed by March. Even that reduced target remained unfulfilled, forcing the National Assembly to extend the budget lifespan until September. He argued that if the government cannot implement its budget, its core purpose—specifically ensuring the safety of citizens—is undermined.
The lawmaker highlighted that security agencies reported receiving no capital allocation, raising concerns about the misuse of funds. He concluded that violating the budgetary process is a clear breach of law and constitutes an impeachable offense.
