Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, recently disclosed that Mary Habila, a nurse employed at the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences who passed away in a guest house at his Uburu residence, reported a nosebleed to her boyfriend the night prior to her death.
Addressing the media regarding the June 27, 2026, incident, Umahi clarified that Habila was a nurse rather than a physiotherapist as previously misreported. He described the deceased as being like a daughter to him, noting she had been receiving treatment for an unspecified medical condition at the Turkish Hospital in Abuja, with his family covering the costs.
Umahi recounted that Habila’s boyfriend stated she had complained of a nosebleed during their final conversation. Although she initially claimed the bleeding had ceased, she became unreachable shortly after the call concluded. When colleagues discovered her the following morning, they had to force open the locked door to find her deceased.
The minister has requested a formal autopsy to establish the cause of death and has engaged the Inspector-General of Police to move the investigation to Abuja. Furthermore, he expressed frustration over the politicization of the event and intends to pursue legal action against those circulating misinformation online.
