Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has praised retiring Commissioner of Police AIG Ikioye Orutugu, calling him a significant asset to Nigeria. During a farewell event at the Light House in Awka on Wednesday, Governor Soludo acknowledged Orutugu’s pivotal role in bolstering state security. This occasion marked the first instance of the Anambra state government hosting a formal retirement ceremony for a serving police officer.
Orutugu, a 60-year-old originally from Bayelsa State, is leaving the force due to reaching the mandatory retirement age. Soludo highlighted the officer’s collaborative approach, noting how his partnership with other security agencies helped stabilize the state. Attorney-General Tochukwu Nweke echoed these sentiments, observing that Orutugu took charge during a period of intense insecurity and leaves with Anambra recognized as one of the nation’s safest states.
During his own remarks, AIG Orutugu thanked the state government, security colleagues, and residents for their cooperation. He urged his fellow officers to prioritize professional integrity over outside influence, stating that a strong reputation is more valuable than material gain. At a separate pulling-out parade, Orutugu specifically commended the media for their role in reporting police achievements. The outgoing chief concluded his service by emphasizing that he entered law enforcement out of a sincere passion for public protection.
