A recent study suggests that restricting sugar intake during the first two years of life could provide long-term protection for the brain. Researchers examined the aftermath of the UK’s post-World War II sugar rationing, which saw daily sugar consumption nearly double once restrictions ended in September 1953.
By analyzing data from approximately 65,000 participants in the UK BioBank, scientists from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology discovered that individuals who were toddlers during the rationing period faced a 23% lower risk of developing dementia. Additionally, those who did receive a diagnosis generally developed the disease over two years later than those born outside the rationing window.
Researcher Jiazhen Zheng noted that these findings indicate early-life nutrition may have significant, lasting impacts on cognitive health. However, the study, published in the journal Neurology, does not establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship.
Experts, including Rachel Richardson of Cochrane and Professor Ian Maidment of Aston University, cautioned that the study is observational and cannot account for all lifestyle variables or the specific dietary habits of individuals from the 1940s and 1950s. While the findings contribute to ongoing discussions regarding the importance of the first 1,000 days of life, researchers emphasize that a balanced diet remains the best approach to maintaining brain health at any age.
