Ebola Surge Claims 65 Lives in Eastern DR Congo

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has reported an Ebola outbreak within the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Health officials have documented 246 cases and 65 deaths, with the impact concentrated in the gold-mining communities of Mongwalu and Rwampara.

Regional health agencies are organizing a summit involving officials from DR Congo, Uganda, South Sudan, and global partners to coordinate containment and cross-border monitoring strategies.

While the Kinshasa-based Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale has confirmed the virus in 13 out of 20 samples, the Congolese government has yet to issue an official declaration.

Ebola transmits through contact with infected bodily fluids and leads to severe internal bleeding and organ failure. Initial symptoms, including fever, fatigue, and muscle pain, often precede a lack of available cures. Laboratory confirmation for suspected cases in the provincial capital of Bunia remains pending.

The region of Ituri has been under military administration since 2021 to address ongoing violence from armed factions, including the Islamic State-aligned Allied Democratic Forces.

This event marks the 17th time the virus has emerged in the nation since its initial discovery in 1976. Historical data indicates that the country faced its most severe crisis between 2018 and 2020, resulting in roughly 2,300 fatalities.
