Lagos health agency corrects data on 2025 HIV statistics

LSACA clarifies that the 10,430 HIV cases reported in 2025 reflect successful testing and outreach efforts rather than a sudden increase in new infections.

The Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) has addressed public confusion regarding reports of 10,430 HIV cases in the state during 2025. Officials clarified that this number reflects the total count of individuals identified through increased testing initiatives, rather than a spike in new transmissions.

This statement followed media coverage of a Federal Ministry of Health report that highlighted the HIV burden in Lagos. LSACA emphasized that the data represents people who discovered their status through state-led programs, many of whom had been living with the virus previously. Because Lagos is the most populous state, the high demand for health services and more efficient reporting systems naturally lead to higher case identification rates.

LSACA described these figures as proof of the state’s successful outreach and surveillance efforts rather than a sign of an unchecked epidemic. The agency continues to partner with federal and private organizations to offer prevention, care, and treatment. They also urged the public to avoid stigma and reminded residents that consistent medical adherence allows those with HIV to lead healthy, productive lives.
