McIlroy Admits Defeat to Shinnecock Hills Course

World number two Rory McIlroy has reflected on his difficult US Open campaign, stating the Shinnecock Hills course got the better of him as he finished six-over par.

Rory McIlroy struggled at the US Open, finishing the tournament at six-over par. The world number two conceded that the challenging layout of Shinnecock Hills ultimately proved too difficult to overcome.

During Sunday’s final round, the Masters winner signed for a 73, recording four bogeys alongside three birdies. McIlroy noted that his momentum stalled during the second half of Saturday’s play, leaving him with an insurmountable deficit against leader Wyndham Clark. Reflecting on his performance, the 37-year-old expressed regret over those late Saturday bogeys, which he believes effectively ended his title aspirations.

Despite trying to maintain a positive outlook during his final round, early bogeys made a recovery impossible. McIlroy is now shifting his focus toward upcoming events in the UK, looking forward to competing in links-style golf at the Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Birkdale this July. He noted that the firm conditions at Shinnecock Hills were somewhat reminiscent of the challenges expected at the Open Championship.
