Marion Bartoli praises the character of France manager Didier Deschamps

Former Wimbledon star Marion Bartoli reflects on her long-standing friendship with France manager Didier Deschamps, highlighting his resilience, competitive nature, and dedication ahead of a crucial World Cup semi-final.

Didier Deschamps remains a central figure in French sports, boasting a record of 103 appearances as a player and 183 matches as head coach of the national team. Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, who has maintained a close 13-year friendship with the coach, describes him as a dedicated competitor and a humorous, reliable companion.

The pair first connected at a 2013 awards ceremony following Bartoli’s Grand Slam victory. Since then, they have stayed in touch, with Deschamps often visiting Bartoli in Dubai. Despite his intense professional schedule, Deschamps makes time for his social circle, including playing padel with figures like Zinedine Zidane and Andres Iniesta. Bartoli jokes that he switched to padel from tennis because it requires less court coverage as he ages.

Deschamps has faced personal challenges recently, having returned to France for his mother Ginette’s funeral during the current World Cup tournament. Bartoli noted his resilience, highlighting his ability to remain focused and motivated despite his grief. As he leads France toward a semi-final showdown with Spain, his long-term goal remains securing another global title to conclude his tenure on a triumphant note.

Bartoli argues that the French public and media often undervalue Deschamps’ consistent success due to the nation’s sky-high expectations. Having won the World Cup as a player in 1998 and as a manager in 2018, his legacy is well-established. While he may take a sabbatical after this tournament, Bartoli expects he will eventually pursue new opportunities in football, as his competitive spirit is too strong to remain idle.
