Wales has made history by becoming the inaugural nation to publicly retract its endorsement of Gianni Infantino’s campaign for another term as Fifa president. This move stems from a significant erosion of trust in the leader, primarily triggered by his aborted attempt to sell equity in major tournaments to private equity groups.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) formally announced it would no longer support Infantino for the 2027-2031 presidential period. The FAW cited systemic failures in leadership, governance, and communication, stating that Infantino’s judgment no longer aligns with the values required for the sport’s global governance. They emphasized that prioritizing interests outside of the game itself is unacceptable to their organization.
Infantino’s proposed investment strategy faced severe international backlash. Uefa even raised the possibility of boycotting Fifa events, including the World Cup, if the plans proceeded. While Infantino eventually retracted the proposal, both Uefa and the North, Central America and the Caribbean association (Concacaf) issued formal rebukes regarding his handling of the situation. The FAW has officially communicated its decision to Fifa leadership.
