Mahdi Shehu Characterizes Northern Nigeria as a Subjugated Region

Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu claims Northern Nigeria has been defeated by poor leadership, greed, and the region’s own failure to adapt to modern societal challenges.

Public affairs analyst Mahdi Shehu has characterized Northern Nigeria as a conquered society, attributing the region’s decline to inadequate governance, pervasive greed, escalating insecurity, and severe economic distress. In a social media post released on Thursday, Shehu contended that the North has suffered both physical and tactical defeat throughout the current democratic era.

Shehu asserted that these challenges are primarily self-inflicted. He pointed to selfish and cowardly regional leaders who prioritized their personal comfort over the collective well-being of the population. Furthermore, he argued that a prevailing culture of docility and a lack of strategic foresight among many residents have accelerated this downward trajectory.

The commentator emphasized that modern conflicts are not restricted to physical combat but are instead defined by propaganda and manipulative tactics, areas where he believes the region has failed to adapt. He sharply criticized northern elders, describing them as self-serving and lacking the courage required for effective leadership. Citing the prevalence of famine, violence, infrastructure decay, and eroding cultural values, Shehu concluded that the North effectively functions as a conquered territory, suggesting that the region now faces a state of total societal collapse.
