Lawyer gives Taraba electoral body one-week deadline to address councillorship seat vacancy

A lawyer has issued a one-week ultimatum to the Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission, demanding they declare the Turaki A Ward councillorship seat vacant and hold a by-election.

Human rights attorney Bilyaminu Lukman Maihanchi has served a final seven-day notice to the Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (TSIEC). The demand calls for the formal declaration of a vacancy for the Turaki A Ward councillor position in Jalingo and the subsequent scheduling of a by-election.

Maihanchi asserts that this move aims to uphold democratic principles and constitutional standards. In a formal letter sent to the TSIEC Chairman this Tuesday, the lawyer referenced a previous petition submitted on April 20, 2026. This initial document highlighted that the current councillor had allegedly taken a new role as Chairman of the Taraba State Scholarship Board.

The lawyer expressed frustration that over 30 days have passed without a response or official action from the Commission. He argues that this delay denies the citizens of Turaki A Ward their right to proper representation and threatens the legitimacy of the local democratic system. Consequently, he has instructed the Commission to investigate the councillor’s status and initiate by-election procedures immediately.

Maihanchi cautioned that if the TSIEC does not meet this seven-day ultimatum, he will pursue litigation to force the Commission to carry out its legal obligations. He noted that he is prepared to seek all available judicial remedies to ensure the matter is resolved according to the law.
