The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has reported a significant rise in activities at the Olusosun Disposal Facility, following improvements to its access road and the addition of new disposal platforms. According to an official statement, the agency successfully cleared over 18,660 metric tonnes of municipal waste within a single week.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA, shared these statistics during a review meeting at the agency’s Ijora-Olopa headquarters. Data indicates that 1,866 truck trips were completed across various facilities from July 28 to August 3, 2026. Specifically, the Olusosun site handled 1,012 truck trips, up from 574 the previous week, marking a growth of more than 76 percent in operational capacity.
Gbadegesin credited these results to strategic investments in infrastructure directed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He noted that the upgrades helped resolve previous delays caused by the rainy season. A record high was reached on August 1, with 349 truck trips processing approximately 3,490 metric tonnes of waste. Other sites, including Ewu-Elepe, Badagry, Oke-Osho, and the Igando Material Recovery Facility, also contributed to the steady performance.
Looking ahead, LAWMA plans to enhance its logistics further by constructing Transfer Loading Stations and purchasing new compactor trucks. The authority remains focused on shifting Lagos from a reliance on landfills toward a sustainable model centered on recycling and waste-to-energy projects.
