The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has lifted the seals on six iron and steel plants in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu. This decision follows a thorough audit that confirmed these companies successfully rectified the environmental breaches that originally triggered their shutdown.
These facilities, which include African Steel Mills Ltd, Pulkit Alloy & Steel Limited, LandCraft Industries Ltd, Sunflag Steel Nigeria Ltd, Gemini Steel Nigeria Ltd, and Top Steel Nigeria Ltd, were initially closed on Monday. The closure was a direct response to data from air quality monitors showing dangerous levels of pollutants such as brown and black dust, along with various metallic particulates.
Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the General Manager of LASEPA, stated that the firms signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) before being allowed to resume operations. The agreement mandates the installation of high-efficiency filtration systems for furnaces and the implementation of rigorous industrial waste management protocols. To ensure these standards are maintained, a technical team from LASEPA has been assigned to oversee the corridor permanently.
Dr. Ajayi emphasized that the agency remains dedicated to protecting public health, noting that long-term inhalation of particulate matter, such as PM2.5, can lead to severe respiratory conditions. By keeping monitoring teams in the area, LASEPA aims to ensure that local industries prioritize the health and safety of nearby residents. Engr. Taiwo Olumuyiwa, the Zonal Head of Ikorodu I, added that firms should align their practices with international standards to ensure ongoing environmental compliance.
