LASTMA officer stabbed by commercial bus conductor during traffic enforcement

A bus conductor was arrested for stabbing a LASTMA official during a traffic stop at Ile-Epo Market in Lagos, leading to a stern warning from agency leadership regarding the safety of their personnel.

A conductor operating a Volkswagen commercial bus was taken into custody after allegedly stabbing a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer on Monday. The altercation took place at the Ile-Epo Market area along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway during a standard traffic enforcement operation.

The patrol team had stopped the vehicle, registered as LSR 989 XG, due to it causing significant traffic obstruction. When the driver refused to comply with regulations, the conductor, identified as Lekan Olasunkanmi, used a screwdriver to wound an officer. The victim was promptly taken to a hospital and is recovering well.

Following the attack, the suspect was turned over to the Abattoir Police Division. During questioning, Olasunkanmi admitted to using the screwdriver but claimed the injury was an accident. LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the violence, warning that the state government will strictly prosecute anyone who obstructs or assaults officials. He emphasized that the agency remains committed to maintaining order on public roads and urged transport operators to abide by the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
