Lagos State Authorities Remove Unsafe Six-Story Building in Ikoyi

Lagos State officials demolished a six-story building in Ikoyi after inspections revealed severe structural defects, including foundation failure and sinking, that posed an immediate danger.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has completed the demolition of a hazardous six-story residential complex situated at 10 Olufemi Pedro Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi. This intervention was conducted to safeguard residents and neighboring structures from potential disaster.

Jubril Gawat, the senior special assistant to the governor on new media, confirmed the action via social media. The agency identified the site during regular inspections within the Ikoyi-Obalende District, noting significant structural flaws and legal infractions. Investigations highlighted critical foundation issues, including sinking, differential settlement, and various cracks spanning the building’s structural components, floors, and surrounding fences.

LASBCA stated that the site lacked essential building permits, adding to its regulatory non-compliance. Prior to the demolition, the agency had officially issued a Contravention Notice for Distressed Structure, a Seal-Up Notice, and a final Demolition Notice. Despite these formal warnings, the property owner or developer provided no response.

General Manager of LASBCA, Bldr. Gbaye Florence, emphasized that the building’s deteriorating condition left no choice but to authorize its removal. Florence reiterated that the agency is dedicated to enforcing construction standards across Lagos to prevent tragedies caused by unstable structures. She urged developers to secure proper documentation and work closely with authorities to address structural risks immediately upon identification.
