Lagos Fire Service investigates blaze at Apapa fuel depot

Lagos State fire authorities have initiated an investigation into a storage tank fire at the Bono Energy Terminal in Apapa, confirming no casualties were reported after a successful containment operation.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has launched an official inquiry into a fire that broke out at the Bono Energy Terminal in the Coconut area of Apapa. Spokesperson Shakiru Amodu confirmed the event occurred on Friday.

Margaret Adeseye, the Controller General of the agency, reported that the fire started around noon involving a storage tank holding five million litres of Automotive Gas Oil. Firefighting units from Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu, and Isolo reached the site by 12:16 p.m. following an alert at 12:04 p.m.

With support from emergency teams stationed at adjacent petroleum facilities, the firefighters suppressed the flames by 1:54 p.m. This rapid action successfully contained the fire to the specific tank, protecting the surrounding infrastructure. No injuries or deaths were reported during the incident.

While officials are still determining the origin of the fire, investigations are currently underway. This emergency follows a separate incident earlier that Friday where responders addressed a leaking gas tanker at Owode Elede without incident.
